When it rains it pours....

So today I came home to see my frogspawn in the sand bed. I never noticed any issues with it because it has always been thriving and over 12" in diameter which blocks my view of the base.

It looks like the base has eroded and there seems to be some sort of fleshy filtering pockets on some stems I've never seen before. Almost looks like some sort of sponge. Could they be hurting the base? Any ideas?

I don’t see anything I’d be concerned with either. Looks normal & healthy to me
