I'm curious if my frogspawn coral looks normal. I always considered it pretty healthy if it fills up like this. However, a couple of month ago I posted about these little polyps in the sand bed. I now know that they are from the frogspawn. It happened a few times. But one happened recently and I just left it in the sand bed. The 'weird' thing I saw that I wish I had on video, was I looked at my tank the other day and there was this green ball (about 1/2" in diameter) floating around the tank, it appears it was the frogspawn polyp that bailed out, it swollen up by itself and start floating around (Looked like a little green soccer ball perfectly round). As soon as it got in front of a power head it deflated and fell back down. Has this ever been seen before by anyone? Like I said, I wish I had a picture of it, but it came and went so fast.

I’ve only seen that when the coral is getting stung.
Odd.

Are you talking about the polyp bailing out when stung? The weird thing was seeing bailed polyp puff up and float around to the top of the tank.

this happens to mine on occasion. I believe that the tentacles twist up and then fall off.

My tank is full with LPSs and I have on multiple occasions see forgspawn blown around and then settle on a live rock for a few days before disintegrating or get sucked up by the pumps. In every single one of those instances, the frogspawn is not happy. So either the frogspawn got stung, tentacles twisted off, or complete polyp bailout due to drastic changes in parameters/light/flow.

Yeah, I'm not really concerned yet about the few polyp bailouts I've seen, that wasn't my real concern on this post. What freaked me out was bailed out polyp coming to life and blowing up like a balloon and floating around the tank. That was the main question of the post was is anyone has ever seen that part happen. Not just the polyp bailout, but the polyp swelling up and floating around the tank. Unless the original Bailout is the swollen part floating and what I see on the sand is the after part. If that's the case, I guess I just missed the initial bailout happening

Oh gotcha. But yes, it’s freaky. This has happened in my tank not too long ago. Actually, the small frogspawn chunk settled underneath my mini acan colony for a week. I didn’t know what was bothering my acans until the one head of acan melted away. Guess what was exposed, a loose and even puffy chunk of frogspawn sitting on the acan skeleton. So yes, it can stay alive for a few days. It’s very weird indeed.

Got a video of it today. So the polyp bails when full then floats around. Not sure why my frogspawn has been releasing tbe polyps. Hopefully the better lighting I have coming will help.
