I have a 6 headed piece, each head is on its own stalk. Been in my tank for about 2 months - tank is only 3 months old post cycle. Recently it hasn’t been extending as much as usual. At first I thought it was because I changed the flow in the tank but now I’m not sure. Do you think some of the heads are splitting?

It was probably your flow change, these types of corals don't split like anemones they slowly grow apart, think months not days.

Trying to get better/closer picture. I have no experience with these guys but looks like two heads on one stalk where there was only one before?

It probably looked like one head it was all out and fluffy, the way they split is they will grow 2 mouths and slowly start to put down a wider branch and very slowly that wider branch will split into a Y where they will move further and further away.

But let's explore other avenues, have you tested for alk, cal, mag, PO4 NO3, Salinity and temperature?

Don’t judge. Only have API test kits

temp 78
Salinity 1.025
PO4 and NO3 = 0 ( I have algae growing That my CUC takes care of so I know it’s not 0)

need to Test again for CAL and Alk but last time it was 380 and 7 respectively. Yesterday I just changed to reef crystals from the basic IO.

Doing 20% weekly water changes in an EVO 13.5

There will be a lot of discussion on the "right" calcium and alkalinity numbers. In my opinion those look a little low. I usually try to keep my tank at ~420 Calcium and ~9 Alkalinity.

The better question to ask is has you parameters been consistent over the 2 months the coral has been in the tank?

My suggestion would be to slowly raise your calcium and alkalinity (I'm talking over a week or two) and see how the coral responds.

Parameters have been consistent other than nitrates slowing dropping to 0. I’ve been consistent on water changes and Assumed my Cal/Alk was low which is why I changed to reef crystals. I only have a handful of smaller frags so can’t believe trace elements are getting used up aggressively.

I did change my flow back to how it was originally so maybe I need a few more days for things to settle.

In my experience consistency is everything. It's good to hear that your parameters have been constant. I remember when I first started that was the hardest thing for me to do. I struggled hard!

I bet you it was just the change in flow. I would just let things settle out now and see what happens. Good luck and let us know how things turn out for you!

Check your Mag as well. That Cal and Alk level is low For what I have found they like. My frog went from 1 head to 4 in about three months. I also add iodine when I do water changes and have seen a huge impact since starting this

Thanks All. Just did a water change with new salt. I’ll test again.

What type of iodine do you use?

Two 20% water changes complete and latest tests had me around 8.5 and 400 for Alk/Cal. Frogspawn still isn’t happy. Hopefully things will start to improve Over the next couple of days.

Any thoughts on impact while running Carbon - in a bag in one of the back compartments? I had changed out an old smaller big with a fresh bigger one around the same time he started acting up.

I personally don't run carbon. The only time I have run carbon is when I had an anemone walk into a power head and get shredded. So in other words, I only run carbon if I am trying to fix something.

Switching to freshwater for a bit, whenever I would run carbon on my planted tanks, it would essentially strip out any fertilizer (potassium, iron, etc) that I would be manually dosing to the tank.

Maybe try removing the carbon entirely and see what happens? Perhaps somebody else on this forum would have more experience with carbon's impact in this type of situation.

Frogspawn Still isn’t extending like he use to. Carbon has been removed for little over a week. My Alk is around 9 and Cal 420. Think the algae I’ve been staring at is Dino’s and my water is maybe too clean - I still have other green algae growing on the glass so who knows. Starting to feed more and going to skip a water change this week (nitrates and Phos are at 0). I bought 2 part for dosing to maintain levels.

Frustrating but trying to take things slow.

Sounds like you are doing the exact steps that I would have suggested to try next. I know it's frustrating but keep at it. Sounds like you are on the right track. Let us know how things turn on.

Just one quick story to show some solidarity. I too had a problem with dino. I started slowly raising nitrates to just slightly above zero (it's hard to read those tests). I then went too much and caused a hair algea outbreak. It took like 3 months but then I started to slowly win the hair algea battle only to start finding that I had aptaisia! Litterally almost restarted my tank at that time. The point is, we have all been through these things. Sounds like you are on the right track, just stick with it and let us know how it goes.

Assuming your test result are correct and you have zero Nitrate and Phosphate (have you asked a LFS to test your water for comparison?), I would feed a bit heavier to try and get those levels up a little above zero.

Sortega - Thanks for support And confidence boost.

Spieg. That’s what I’m doing, feeding frozen twice a day instead of once and added reef roids into the mix a few times per week.

I know API isn’t the best, but I was getting Nitrate and Phosphate readings for a few months post cycle before they hit zero. I thought it was a false zero since I had diatoms, film algae daily on glass and some hair algae.
