Got myself into a dilemma here, I ran out of clams on a half shelf for my eel last night and of course my LFS is closed today. I think I have a frozen mix I made for him but I am no 100% sure. What would be safe at a super market? Would raw frozen shrimp be okay?

If they’re raw and unsalted then they should be fine. Just make sure there’s nothing added like seasonings or something.

The stuff we get ourselves isn't I know 100% not too sure about salt though, I'll have to check once I'm done with work.

Just make sure there are no major additives like food coloring. Otherwise you should be fine. I use to buy a pack of frozen fish at some asian market, gutted them, took out the egg sack and fed super finicky fish the fish eggs. They went crazy for it. The short of it is that you should be safe. Even getting a single raw shrimp from market should be fine.

I used to grab a few of the fresh (never frozen) shrimp from the seafood case when in a pinch. Funny look on the guys face when I asked for "4 of those shrimp please", "only 4?", "yep". lol

When I told the guy at deli these were for my anemones - he said "your enemies?" - then showed him a picture. Yea, he was still clueless....

My 4 eels eat Publix scallops and frozen shrimp. They seem happy and live with pipefish and tiny fish lol.
stay away from any seasoning.

A word of caution if you are considering purchasing typically non-frozen seafood....for mollusks, those already shucked....they might contain sodium tripolyphosphate. And here's the kicker....they don't have to put it on the label. Some times you can tell, because what this does is make the product look shiny. If the store applied it, and you ask, they have to tell you.

I've been feeding this in place of frozen mysis. My fish and corals seem to love it, and being a filter feeder, I consider clams to be more nutritious than shrimp.

This 1 lb cost $16 and will last months.

When I had my Eel - a 4' Undulated named Hannibal - I fed him whatever the seafood counter at Krogers had that was on sale. As long as it came from a marine environment - not freshwater - he'd eat whatever I gave him. Usually 3+ hand sized fillets weekly. Worked great for the 25 years I had him. I got to know the folks at the seafood counter - they would save me stuff that they figured he'd like, and give it to me for a great price.
