I recently picked up a fu Manchu dwarf lion about a week ago, at first he was very inactive but now he’s become less shy , I notice around 7:30-8:00pm ( around the time when the Light sundown Occurs ) he comes out , rides the glass for a while Swimming all around the tank , I’ve tried to feed him but he doesn’t seem to want to eat , I saw him eat frozen food ( krill and silversides ) at the LFS but for some reason he won’t eat with me , is there something I may be doing wrong ?

A fu manchu is very temperamental when it comes to eating dead food, as well as other dwarf lions but even more so. Even if previously eating dead food, there's almost always a reset when they are moved. In all likelihood(99.9%) you will have to get him eating again with live food; ghost shrimp, guppies, or appropriate sized mollies. Even if you get him eating dead food, the likelihood of long term success on a dead only diet is very slim. If you want more tips on feeding dwarf lions click on my name then "show all threads". There is also a high risk of internal parasites, which would inhibit him from eating; check for stringy white poo(hanging or around the tank). It;s so prevelant in dwarf lions, it's always a good idea to prophylactically treat for internal parasites or be very experienced at observation.

Ok thanks so much for in the info ! I’m gonna check it out now , thank you !

Ok
Use a kabob stick and Gently wave a piece of krill in front of it when sundown occurs. It always worked for me in the past.
I’ll definitely try that out , that’s a good idea , I did add some peppermint shrimp in the tank not to long ago and they seam to be gone but it sucks not knowing for sure if it was him that ate them , hopefully this works, I noticed to it does look like he has a little belly going so that’s a plus

I’ve been following the lion fish lair guide (which seems to have been taken down) where by you introduce your live food in a particular net in a particular spot and your lion fish learns net= food

then you move from live food to stunned food to frozen/thawed food (all the same you’ve been feeding - so if guppy you stick with guppy) and then when you’ve had success with that you try silversides

my lion was very thin and I have been trying to get some weight on , but he now waits in the spot every time he knows he will be fed (every other day) we have successfully moved to stunned fish, will be trying frozen then thawed guppies soon

What net did you use for this ? Where would I be able to get one ? Also he would automatically understands that it is food since he knows that’s something he would eat ? I’m definitely interested in trying this out

I just use a mini blue net like this

I find the bigger nets fold and trap the guppy/lion fish inside whereas the minis are a better size and don’t fold .

Start with live - they very quickly realize the live fish is in the net , maybe 2-3 times to make the connection

Hey just took a quick video to show the net process in action .

As you can see the net is in the water for 2 seconds before he swims right over .

I am normally gutloading the guppy and then putting it in freezer in a small cup of water for 10min so it’s stunned
But didn’t have time today so he got a live one .

Will post a way better video on the predator page in the next few days
