Fuge clean out

Hey Guys,
Thinking of cleaning out my fuge. It has gotten pretty nasty with sponge and algae. I have a 3 inch sand bed and some rubble in there. I want to remove all the sand. My question is...what should I put back in? Just cheto? rock? also...can I just remove the sand all at once or will that cause a mini cycle?

I would remove the sand very slowly over the next few months. Deep sandbeds can release all the nutrients in them and you don't want that.

As for what to put in there I have a marinepure block and cheato.
