Hi to all those whom have taken the time to read this.

I am new in the hobby and have a red sea reefer200(pfp). My tank is cycle and about at day 12. Used Dr Tims to cycle. Rites are around 5ppm and rates are about 30/35. But thats just current info.

My question is this. Im not planning on having a ton of fish. Probably about 6-8 two clowns, 4 chromis, and possibly 2 mandarins. Im wondering if i can skip a skimmer and just have a refugium set up. I have a picture of my current sump set up. Can i just turn the main part of the sump into a refuge for filtration and copepod populations?

I can move the reefmat more to the back of the sump..

You can turn it into a fuge. The question is coral. Controlling nutrients, which the skimmer will do, will be more important depending on what coral you decide to keep.

Ok i was planning on having a pretty mixed reef. So ill just need to keep adding pods every other month or so…?

That's more dependent on the....load you have (ie: the mandarins) depleting the pods... vs the tanks ability to maintain sufficient population/density of pods.
