I haven't taken pics of the tanks lately so I got some the other day.

Looks great, H@rry!! Your frags are getting the colors back nicely. Was it the extra fish or the shortening the light period that finally helped to bring the color back in?

I think the whole problem was that I was starving the frags. I don't have a skimmer on the frag tank and I was being very careful about feeding the two small damsels. I think I just had a nutrient poor environment. I added a pair of clowns and a 6 line wrasse and started feeding a small amount 3 times a day. I also put lights back on the same cycle as the display tanks. It has made a world of difference. One thing that I noticed is that while the new frags that I add hold their color well, the frags that were "starved" are much slower to regain their color. I guess it's about like taking a little starving boy from Ethiopia out to Popeye's every day for a week and expecting him to look like the other kids in the neighborhood.

Are those anthias in the third shot? and what is the yellow damsel in the frag tank? I'm thinking about adding a few more fish and I'm torn between "Highlander" chromis (there can be only one) and "Disappearing" Anthias (Soon there will be none). That or a pair of Orchid Dottybacks... now that I'd really like.

Gary;

Those are Purple Queen Anthias and the Damsel is just a common Yellow Damsel. $5 from the Aquarium Shop.

Looking good, H@rry. Looks like there is plenty of room for growth.

Jenn actually mentioned a larger tank for me the other day:). I'd love a 8-10' x 30-36" wide tank:).

I am glad that your frag tank recovered :). I really love the colorful candy shop look of the frag tank.

A similar thing happens in planted FW tanks, too. When you blast it with extra strong light without an extra food input, the plants go into overdrive and use up all the nutrients in the tank really fast. The plants look really great with intense colors for a week or so, but soon they run out of stored energy and start looking anemic.

By the way, your tank looks much better in person.

Thanx Tomoko. We have noticed that while we moved everything from established tanks when we set them up, there was still a period of some kind of adjustment or cycling. I think disturbing the sand bed might have been a big part of it. The tanks continue to look healthier from week to week. We have gradually increased the fish population too. We've gotten some very nice fish from Jason and Tammy. I think with the waste material from them and increased feeding the corals have been very happy. The sump is literally crawling with mysis (mysid?) shrimp and other pods and micro starfish. Now if I only could keep the alk up!

I have actually got our alk back up.Still have a little color problem.I need to get back to see you two soon.Gary,I have some orchid dotty backs and some anthias.

I need to import some mysid. My sump for 180 does not seem to have any of them. I see copepods and amphipods in the display tank and my mandarin is very happy but no mysid there, either. Wonder what happened to them cause I used to see a lot of them in my 120.

H@rry - you have a few tangs in your tanks. Are they behaving well? I would like to add a tang or a rabbitfish to control bubble algae, but I am still scared of them turning into zoa eaters.

Tomoko - We have 5 tangs and none of them are giving any problem but they're not bothering the bubbles. The only thing I have ever noticed eating bubble algae was a FoxFace. We had a pretty large one a while back that would eat the small ones. He died and we got another smaller one that died too. That was the only thing I have ever seen eat bubble algae.

I have a purple tang and a foxface and they never touch the zoas, softies or lps. I feed heavy though.

Harry, what kind of lighting do you have on your tank? And how did the starfish get on the outside of the tank..lol

Paul - I have the most trouble with that starfish trying to run away from home!:angel:. Actually, that is a towel I got out of a bucket of Instant Ocean. I hung it over the back of the tank because the light from another tank was affecting my pictures.

Lighting:

Pics 1 - 4: 6 T5s (4 Daylight and 2 Actinic)
Pics 5 - 8: 3 400w 20K MH w/2 VHO Actinics
Pics 9 - 11: 3 400w 10K MH w/2 VHO Actinics
Pics 12 - 13: 2 250w 10K MH, 1 175w 10K MH, 2 VHO Actinics
Frag Tank: 2 175w 10K MH w/2 ATI Blue + T5s

LOL that explains it. I am going to move my monti caps to the bottom of the tank when I move from my 75 to a 220. I have mine midway and up high under my (2) 250w and they spread horizontally instead of cupping more like yours and other I see. They tend to shadow other coral below.

Yeah, that cap is as big as a basketball. The rock it's on is the size of a football. It's taking up too much real estate. I'd like to sell it but nobody local will pay the price. I've had several people want it but they want it shipped. I don't know how to pack it so it won't arrive as a big bag of frags!

Visiting Athens and reading your forum. Desjardini Saltwater Aquarium Fish for Marine Aquariums: Sailfin Tang, Desjardini

are supposed to eat bubble algae. Just make sure you get that one and not the Pacific. The Pacific has a yellow tail.

My purple tang has been seen eating bubble algae, too. I've not given it a chance on zoas (SPS tank), but I know it devoured my electric blue cespit within minutes of it hitting the water. Bad experience with a scribbled rabbit and zoas (and a neon green pocillopora, and my acan lords, then my acan echinata's-holy terror).
