Hi all, I’m trying to get some feedback on how those of you who work full time jobs (not at home) take care of your labor intensive fish? Specifically tangs and wrasses that’s need to eat 3+ times a day. I’m in the process of planning my upgrade and want some of these species so I’m interested in how you do it!! Thanks

My Auto feeder is my friend. I feed 2x with auto feeder during the day and feed manually myself when I get home.

You can mix meaty pellets and algae pellets to feed both types of fish. With no problem. I also add some reef roids with the pellets to add something for the coral.

This also covers you if you go on vacation or just have a bunch of stuff planned on the weekend.

I only feed two times a day and I think I wouldn't get fish like anthias that require more than that. My yellow tang is fat and happy with this arrangement. I honestly feel like there is plenty of live stuff in the tank for them to graze on between feedings.

APEX is flawless

APEX is flawless

I’m going back and forth between apex and GHL. I don’t use a controller on my tank now so I’m not very experienced with them. I’m assuming you like your apex? And thoughts on the two main options?

An automatic feeder can certainly bridge gaps during the day for many fish. I personally would not put tangs in the ‘Labor intensive’ category .... they’ll do fine fed morning and night. Fish that require more frequent feeding, but aren’t likely to eat the kinds of foods that can be automatically dispensed, should be avoided. Mostly pseudoanthias.

My tangs are easy. I feed them in the morning and in evening when I get home from work. I basically place a dried veggie sheet onto a clip. They eat frozen food at night along with my other fish. If you want to keep the higher maintenance fish, I'd think about an automatic feeder. However... I do have anthias that only eat once a day with all the other fish. I've had them for years. I purchased them before I knew it was recommended that they be fed a few times a day. They are doing fine, but I can't guarantee it is the healthiest way to keep them. (Now I look up everything before I purchase it.) I wouldn't get them today if I knew their care requirements beforehand.

I've kepted Kole, yellow and tomini tangs with just 2 feeding/day, sometimes once/day w/o a problem. Think it also helped that there was algae for them to eat off the glass and rocks.

So in your experience the feedings can be condensed into a ~5 hour period without any ill effects?

Yes, at least with wrasses. All 10 of mine are fat and happy. I've had my Potter's leopard wrasse for about 6 years.

Balancing !!

I work nights so I have the morning to feed tanks dry and the evening I feed 2 oz of frozen. I have auto feeders, so the fish get a snack every three hours to keep them fed and busy

Seaweed in the am and pellets in the pm. I work 9-10hrs 40-60 a wk. They get fed 1x a day to every other day while on vaca

I feed my tangs one sheet of nori daily. They seem to prefer the red nori over the green nori, but I alternate. I roll the sheet into a tight cylinder/cigarette shape and then zip-tie it to a rock, and drop the rock on the sand. They attack it, but it takes them a while (hours) to finish it off.
