Sup guys! I just got a small baby Fungia for $5 at a LFS. What a steal! been eyeing one for a while, and finally got my chance. I'ts a little smaller then a quarter. I've got some questions about it, and want to make sure it prospers. I got him Saturday afternoon, so its his second day in the tank, which means he's stil settling in a bit.

1. It seems to be on a stalk of some kind, which seems unusal, and the stalk is glued to the frag plug. I didn't think fungia had stalks? This guy was glued onto the frag plug on a frag rack so mabye it was stretching? Should I take him off the frag plug? Will he move around?

2. Is it normal for it not to be big and fluffy during the day? He seems to be mainly skeleton during the day, with some tentacles poking out. At night he will fluff up more and you can't see the skeleton, btu all the fungia pics I've seen they've been well inflated?

During the night (srry for bad pic)

3. Where's a good spot for him? I've mosty seen people suggest sandbed, but I'm worried he might get lost if I take him off the plug. Lighting and flow levels?

4. Should I feed him like any other LPS? e.g. reef roids, polyp booster, phyto, mysis, freshseafood puree, ect.

Cute guy you have there. I would leave him on plug till he grows a bit. I have a baby too and it fell off the plug. I worry constantly where he is. He moves all over the place. You will want it in lowish light and low flow.
You can feed, but not overfeed. I would broadcast a coral food near him at night.
He looks fine in both night and day shots.
Good luck!

Thanks! Hoping he grows fairly fast. Will leaving him on the sandbed be fine or actually move it into the shade?

I think I'll be leaving it where it is, its got really good PE and is starting to fluff up during the day now. I think it just needed to settle in. Thanks!

nice I have always wanted on of these guys...good luck!

Thanks man! I can't wait till he gets nice and big.

Feed him a little reef frenzy in a pipette. Watch him get it to his mouth!

Haha I've already fed him some Roids and Phyto... Man he loved it.

The problem is I don't think he can move by himself. He's glued to a frag plug via his skeleton.
Won't be...

It will detach from its stalk when it is ready. If you try and remove from the plug it may break off the stalk. Leave it be and hell figure it out. It looks good so keep doing what you are doing but again, don't remove from its stalk.

It can detach from it's stalk by itself? I've never heard of a fungia having a stalk, is it normal?

Yes. They slime a lot on the bottom. Think about it this way...they can digest a critter, glue is no big deal.

Yes. They all start out with a stalk. They will detach when they are mature enough for the environment they are in.
