Funk SNAPPED! That’s all it takes!

What is the reefing funk? It’s the point in the hobby where you don’t enjoy your aquarium anymore. It’s more of a hassle than a hobby.

Sometimes we get into a reefing “funk” if you will. My “eye rolling” thread are sometimes some of the causes of it. But just as soon as you find yourself in a reefing funk you can find yourself snapped out of it!

What are some things you do to snap yourself out of a funk or what types of stuff happens within your tank that gets you rocking and rolling again?

Helping others learn and be successful works for me. Also the magic of fry is also a powerful encouragement for me to keep at it.

Just spent close to two hours servicing all three tanks. What funk. . . LOL
Those 7" socks on the new tank have to weigh 3# when I first pull them !!!

For me, a deep cleaning that brings the tank back to its full glory reminds me of why I love it and gets me excited about improving it.

I also was fortunate enough to be able to design a system that allows very minimal maintenance, so the weekly chores do not exhaust me like they did before I set up that system.

For me, a deep cleaning that brings the tank back to its full glory reminds me of why I love it and gets me excited about improving it.

I also was fortunate enough to be able to design a system that allows very minimal maintenance, so the weekly chores do not exhaust me like they did before I set up that system.

Ah yes! A fresh cleaning always helps me. Maybe I cheat a little and add a brand new layer of white sand! Ha! Ever done that?

The tanks are actually my own. I cleaned the dosers on all three tanks ( 50 gal Drop off, 93 cube and my new 660G . Then came the filter socks and the skimmers and the 660 of course has the larger model skimmer with sensors, so takes some time.
Then was the glass in which two of the tanks are acrylic, so you go a little slower as not to catch sand and/or scratch the surfaces. The 660 is 10" length so it is by no means a quick swipe. . LOL.
Then I refilled all the AFS auto feeders and then mixed and filled dosers and the ATO resevoirs.
Other than cleaning the glass, most everything I did last 2-3 weeks.

If you havent had a chance, see my 660g build thread. Tank is running 7 weeks tomorrow and coming along nicely.

I got stuck in a nasty funk a few years ago. I moved to a new place & with me came my 50 gallon mixed reef that was at its greatest. My first summer at the new place became my worst nightmare. I had never delt with heat issues before but the new building I moved into turned literally into an oven on the first 90+ degree summer day & cooked all my babies. Lost everything. That was a tough funk to shake off. The tank sat empty but running for the past 3 years, for the exception of a wrasse fish that survived hell. This past year I got curious to check out reefapalooza, mainly to just kill time on that particular weekend & the show sparked that itch again. It also gave me curiosity of what the forums were looking like now & now I’m working on freshening up my 50 again. I know I have a lot of work ahead of me but it’s exciting. I have my QT systems cycling at the moment & will begin hunting for some old school coral favorite pretty soon. I would say the trade shows & forums pulled me out of that nasty funk I was stuck in.

Additionally I am able to indirectly steward by helping people better care for their fish, corals, and other livestock.

Additionally, there is something about seeing fry in my tanks that evokes a visceral reaction and moves me beyond the frustrations of life. In spite of my incompetence, fish want to live and reproduce. When I am able to open the space for my fish to thrive and then they choose to breed, in a small way I am able to be part of new life and the creation process.

Also about the fry, I totally agree! My Picasso clownfish lay eggs on schedule every few weeks and it always amazes me!
