I plan on treating a blenni from DT (if I can catch the darn thing) with Furan2 in a newly set up 10G hospital tank with a HOB sponge and seachem matrix that has been seeded on the DT for about 6 weeks

I normally add Biospira to augment the bio filtration of a new tank. Do I need to worry about the Furan2 killing off the bacteria and causing ammonia spike, etc? Should I not use the Biospira?

Thanks!

It won’t hurt the biofilter. What are you trying to treat?

A bit of a mystery disease. No signs of illness other than some lethargy and not really eating.

I'm also suspicious on internal parasites but have not been able to confirm white poop

I would still add the biospira.

Furan-2 won't have much of an impact on biofilter.

I don’t recommend treating with antibiotics without a diagnosis — but for internal parasites (which ABX often treat as well).

My suggestion if it eats at all is General Cure and seachem focus (to bind the GC) added to the food to treat internally. Uronema is very common these days - the metroplex in general cure should kill this and other parasites while the other ingredient, praziquantel, kills the other internal parasites.

If you kept the fish in any antibiotic at all I’d use metroplex. For a wider spectrum you’d use kanaplex, metroplex, and furan 2 although again if you aren’t sure you’re treating an external infection I wouldn’t recommend it.

It’s certainly possible that you’re dealing with an internal infection and if the fish doesn’t eat I suppose metroplex or general cure in the water column could help a little but it’s definitley not ideal and the odds are stacked against you.

Generally speaking biospira isn’t marginally impacted by these antibiotics— but I’d watch closely with an ammonia alert badge because they definitely don’t HELP. Biospira is fine to use with ABX, just not typically recommended with Chloroquine Phosphate as it can degrade the CP.

One antibiotic that’s phenomenal for treating fish but also is very hard on the biofilter is NFG (nitrofuracin green). That would be the major exception to my comments above.

I am trying the GC and Focus in with frozen food right now, first. I had also made an algae wafer paste with GC and focus that I'm trying to get him to eat as well

He's repeatedly sucking in the algae paste and spitting it out. I'm hoping some is getting into his gut even though he's spitting it out. He may have eaten a small amount of the GC/frozen and the paste

I'm having issues with these internal parasties/worms. I treated this fish (TSB) in QT with GC/Focus for 10 days, it came back. Then 14 days in QT, it went away. Then another fish I had treated in QT tank with GC/Focus prophylactically for 14 days got white stringy poop in the DT and I treated for 14 days (along with the TSB tankmate) and he is fine as of today. This blenny has been treated three times already with GC/Focus, its driving me nuts

Add some garlic guard for flavor to make it more palatable, it may help.

I think I may have turned the corner on this blenny. It looks like he's eating the GC medicated food. I think the GC/Algae paste may have been a good idea. Even though he just sucked it in and spit it out when he wasn't eating, perhaps enough got into his gut to help

My hunch is that the problem is internal parasite/worm or external or perhaps both. I saw what looked like white stringy poop floating around a couple days ago. Its been persistant. He's been treated two doses on prazi and a 10 day and 14 day regimen of GC in food in QT and then another 14 day GC in food in DT when the wrasse had white poop, and yet it returned. I'm about to do a second dose of Prazi.

I'm thinking of keeping him on GC with food for 21 days this time to try to finally knock it out. I guess I'll have to treat the wrasse in the DT for 21 days also even though he seems fine. He had white poop about 8 weeks ago and they were both treated withGC in food .

Is this a good plan at this point?
