I got a new little girl (sh) who came in with what I think is tail rot very early stage no discoloration just wont use here tail been treating with furan 2 bath along with oral antibiodics in here food she is doing good but was reading tonight and two sites said that furan two deactvates with light here tank has been lite during for the last 5 days (are these days wasted) the day should i stop she is in a tank inside the sump (water does not mix) to keep it cool the sump does have some coral in it that needs light how could i black it out that wont hurt the water or should i just sacrafice the coarl and go dark the directions on fuarn2 did nor mention about the phopto sensitivity thank you meredith

@vlangel . Have you heard of this before?
No I have not heard it before I was just trying to research vibro/tail rot and a site on ocean ryder mentioned it and so did a comment fromsome one on fused jaw i have not used furan 2 before i just want to treat her the best way poss she is doing good and seems to be resopnding

I've seen it posted many times over the years that light does degrade Furan II. It is a known factor that a lot of medicines are diminished by light.
Another thing to remember is that a lot of medicines deplete the oxygen as well so it's important to use heavy open ended aeration in hospital tanks with treatment.
Can you not move the coral temporarily to another container/tank that can be lit and then turn off the light for the seahorse?
I'd consider the time period for treatment to start now and do a full recommended dose for the recommended number of days as the antibiotic may have been compromised by the light. Longer treatment of an antibiotic would be better than a shorter or undertreatment, if not for the seahorse, it certainly lessens the chance of producing more resistant bacteria.

thank you for the reply i do have a air hose so it wont hurt the seahorse to be in complete darkness for two weeks as that is what i am understanding for treating her

No not complete darkness.
Main thing is not to have a light source directed at the hospital tank as the stronger the light the faster the degradation of the treatment. Less light is better but only to a point. The seahorse needs light to be able to feed so complete darkness would be problematic.
For me, I just place the hospital tank in a darker area of the room I use for growing artemia and tisbe and phyto. The area in the basement normally stays around 68°F so I don't have to worry about chilling the water.

Yes, it is true that all the antibiotics are somewhat deactivated with high lighting. I still have some light on my 10 gallon hospital tank so I can see to syphon out uneatten food. It is not a reef light, just a regular 40 watt bulb.

Still, I don't think your days with the light are completely wasted. To be safe however, if she is eating well I would continue to treat her for the 5 additional days. You do not want the bacteria to gain strength and become resistant to the furan 2.

Oops, I see rayjay already responded and I would totally agree with everything he said. I always use an open airline in my HT for my seahorses for extra aeration.
My light is not directly over my HT either, it is indirect light.

I am happy to hear that she is responding well.
