I am a pipe fitter by trade and have been in the PHVAC&R trade for about 35 years now...
This topic is one that has held my interest for many years.
I have followed this topic throughout my years in the trade.
PVC is Poly Viynl Chloride piping no matter who sells it...
PVC will leach into anything that comes in contact with it.
UV and sunlight will destroy it.
Adding color to the pipe is just one more thing to leech out.
PVC pipe is not ok to use with RODI water, while CPVC pipe can.
PVC pipe made prior to 1977 or so, REALLY LEACHED chemicals into our water.
PVC pipe will get brittle over time and will break like glass, why? Most people say it's because the chemical make up of the pipe leached out enough for this to happen.
We use it for all kinds of things today but is it as safe as everyone thinks....?
I personally don't think it is and could explain a lot of the health issues we and our pets experience these days.
You do the research if your interested and decide for yourself....
Leaching studies conducted over the past 30 or so years that I'm aware of, have found that PVC, CPVC, HDPE, PE, PEX (latest and greatest is the worst culprit) and PP pipes do leach potentially toxic chemicals such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, methyl ethyl ketone, acetate and hundreds more, into drinking water.
Phthalates (chemicals used in manufacturing plastic pipe to make the vinyl softer) are also harmful.
This topic is so exhausting due to the number of chemicals that leach and under various conditions, that all I can say is to search out any scientific document and just look at its findings, they all same this is true.
