I have a fw tank full of Amazon swords and I have to trim often. I was wondering if I could use the swords for food in my reef.

Advice please.

I am not sure how appetizing your fish will find them. My swords are not eaten by my herbivore fw fish in appreciable amounts.

Nutrient wise there are a lot more complex starches in fw plants than marine algae.

So that wouldn't be good for the fish.

The leaves are very firm and would be too thick and hard to tear and digest. You can use romaine lettuce leaves though. Wash each leaf, place in freezer ( to separate cellulose film) and place in tank

If by chance you garden, i save my clippings and handfuls of java moss for compost. I quicken its breakdown by adding the gunk from my pond filter. This will not smell like rotten death like most compost either so i just keep a small 5 gallon bucket by my side door. Installed a valve to let the moisture escape
