My friend has gave me a fx6 canister filter for free and I am wondering how to incorporate it into a reef tank.

Maybe I shouldn't but I'm not one to say no to free things and not try and use it.

That is a nice canister - whether or not it is appropriate to add to your system and in what capacity is another questions. Many hobbyists will suggest that the hobby has moved past canister filters and use phrases like "nitrate factories" while a few others will mention how they have been running their system effectively for many years. Other people use a canister on an intermittent basis to supplement their existing filtration. Before offering any specific recommendations, I am curious about your current system and near term plans so that additional input can be tailored to your situation.

I have a 150 gallon aquarium with a 40 gallon sump. Cs180 protein filter and a brs carbon filter.

I have plans to plumb in an 80 gallon aquarium that has a 30 gallon sump (he gave that to me for free as well) and a 115 gallon that has a 29 gallon sump. But that is still in a conceptual stage.

A few ways to add the canister as a supplemental filter is to fill it with poly fill batting for clear up cloudy water after initially adding sand; fill the chambers with a blend of poly fill batting and carbon (or other chemical filtration) to use as occasionally for water clarification; or use on one tank to seed the bacteria and then transfer to another new tank to speed up the cycling process; or use as a initial temporary filtration on another system while you are getting the sump in place. Good luck!
