GAC in an SPS or SPS dominated tank

I want to get everyone’s opinion, thoughts and experiences on the use of activated carbon in an SPS or SPS dominated tank. It’s always been the go to for removing dissolved organics and making your water crystal clear. But other schools of thoughts say it removes trace elements and nutrients too quick and will make your SPS pale and give your tangs HLLE disease. So, should it be used 24/7, not at all or somewhere in between and then removed after it serves it purpose?

I've used GAC 24/7/365 for the better part of 40 years in FW and salt.


It's never been officially linked to HLLE, just anecdotal evidence it can cause it. I use it more of the tannins in the water, and for the smell. I can tell when my carbon needs to be changed as my tank gets that "low tide" smell. Change the carbon, and the smell goes away.

i had issues with Rox carbon while usingit at full strength. I was having issues with SPS tips burning and STN issues. I had everything in check and the only change I made was to reduce the Rox to 1/4 recommended dose. After that my SPS turned around. I know it's not scientific, but that was the only change I made.

I used it 50/50, but now rarely. If i see a problem I'll throw it in but that's it now.
Its been probably close to a year since I've used it.

24/7 ! Change out monthly

I used to use it 24X7 in my SPS tank for years....haven't used it in about a year. Didn't notice a difference either way.
