Has anyone marked out the gallon increments on the brute 20 gallon trash cans. I have them both filled with rodi water atm, or I’d put water in 5 g buckets and mark it. If so, can you list the measurements you’ve got marked on the side or a stick until I can get one empty?

Measure off the bottom of the can. Hard to do if full. The bottom isn’t perfectly flat so measurements could be off 1/4 of an inch but will get you close.
6 1/2 inches from bottom = 5 gallons
11 1/2 inches from bottom = 10 gallons
16 1/2 inches from bottom = 15 gallons
21 inches from bottom = 20 gallons
I made a stick out of pvc that’s pretty exact. Took some time and measurements, but works well.

The very bottom of the pvc is 5 gallons. Then up from there are the black zip ties. First zip tie from bottom is 10 gallons. I measured out 5 gallons at a time and used the lettering on the pvc as a mark. Then drilled a small hole at this mark to run a small ziptie through. Drilled through both sides of pipe. That way the zip ties would stay put.

Awesome information! I wonder if anyone did this for other size brutes like the 32 or 44?
Not sure, I’m sure someone has!! Best I could come up with! I’m upgrading soon so will be making another stick for a 50 gallon brute. Lol. The 20 is gonna be a little small. It just hooks over the side. Had to trim down the 90’s for a good fit. It would be a lot easier if they would just make these with gallon marks!

Dude I been wondering all week about my brute 20 lol your zip ties don’t really align with the measurements though

How do you close the lid with your set up? I have a 32g Brute and filled with 5 gallons of water at a time, etching/scoring each increment with a pocket knife, then dried it out and marked over each etching with a black sharpie. I then measured the increments with a yard stick and replicated the marks on my other can.

Not sure if this was directed towards me, but the pvc measuring stick is removable. After I’ve measured the amount of water I need, I remove the stick. Then put a lid on it.

I did this for Brute 32g and I have just marked inside the can on either side with a black sharpie. Measured from the bottom of the can:

5g = 5"
10g = 9"
15g - 13 1/2"
20g = 18 1/8"

I thought it would be a little more linear--i.e., inch increments would get smaller as the can gets larger the higher up you go--but the indentations, etc., result in a something a little more random.

Awesome stuff! I always say that I have to do the measurements but I only remember when the brutes are full!! Lol!

Thanks for doing this. If it gets me close enough that’s great. I appreciate the effort. I had one mark on mine at roughly 12 gallons. This is WAAAY better.

Did you use zip ties for to make your markings, or is that tape? I thought I saw zip ties, but in this photo it looks like something else...
