I want to set up a frag tank in the garage, but it smells of exhaust from parking our cars. I was wondering what sort of ways the surrounding air can affect water in a tank.

I'm also not sure on this. I have my quarantine tanks in the garage and it seems fine. I try not to leave the car running in the garage - I start up & pull it straight out.

I'm also worried about mice in the garage - say they decide to go for a swim or a pee lol

That's not a big concern here but my cat did knock a full pack of Hikari Seaweed Extreme pellets down off the shelf and our German Shepherd ate it, which wasn't awesome really ;)

Car exhaust will certainly lower pH. I'm not certain what other noticeable effects might be, but IMO, pesticide traces are a bigger concern. If your garage smells like such chemicals, it might not be a good idea.

I have my sump in the garage and my wife parks on the other side but it never smells like exhaust in the garage. Wife knows she has to get situated in the car and open the door before starting the car and pulling right out. When she comes back she will leave the door open for a few minutes to air out as long as the weather isn't bad. I also have a ventilation fan pumping house air into the garage, that's more for temperature control but helps with keeping car fumes vented as well.

If you are doing a frag tank and can't get rid of the smell in the garage I would cover the tank. I would either not run a skimmer, run carbon on the air intake, or run the air intake to somewhere with cleaner air.
