It's real simple... We all mess up. And when I mess up, I go back to the person and say, "You know what? I messed up. Actually, someone else replied first." It's pretty simple. If your definition of trying doesn't include rectifying a mistake, then I'm not sure you're trying.

It's your prerogative to do whatever you want. But don't say claim you're going by order of reply when you're not.
