So, as mentioned in previous posts, I've had great results running a turbo Aquatics scrubber for two months now. I pulled near a full baseball sized ball of hair algae off today! Was amazingly exciting to see that much hair algae in 5 days.

I haven't ran a skimmer for the two months I've been running the scrubber on a 400 gallon mixed reef with 13 fish.

However, where the overflows come into the sump and the exit on the scrubber, the water kept on foaming up like it was it's own skimmer. Even though I wasn't running the skimmer. I had so much suspended debris in the display that it was starting to look cloudy.

So, today, I rearranged things and go the skimmer going and was able to keep the scrubber going. I have a Diablo skimmer rated for a 500 gallon system. I've had issues with it overflowing or not pulling anything out. Which, is why I stopped using it.

Today I dialed the pump to the second speed setting and it was still pulling so much just foam out of the water into the skim bucket, but, the foam was so much that it kept on foaming out of the top holes.

Why would there be that much foam? It's not really water, and it's not really debris. It's like soap was added to the sump or something. Just so much suds... I think it's good it's getting pulled out, but don't know what causes it. The water is getting a little more clearer in the display but anticipate it'll take several days of none stop skimming to clean it up.

I restarted my 180g after shutting it down for a few years and this time I went skimmer less even though I have a closet full of skimmers. It's been up for 11 months now with a Chaeto reactor on a reverse cycle, my water is clear and my nutrients are in check so much that I have to add kn03 to balance out the nutrient stripping.
I'm guessing that without running a skimmer in the system, there is excess protein from feedings and floc in the water but still, it's working well for me to date,

I have a lot of suspended debris (micro particles or nutrients) in the water column. Do you run any clarifying filtration to remove particles from the water column?

It’s probably just doing what it does just extra since it’s been offline for a couple months, once it settles down just dial it in and keep it going.
