Seems to me there is a lot of misinformation out there about GE silicone 2 having "mold inhibitors"

Kudos to this guy for doing some investigating and clearing up the real differences in the various packaging of GE 1 and 2. If he is correct, my understanding is the only difference is the chemicals in use that evaporate as it cures. Silicone 1 leaving a vinegar residue and Silicone 2 leaving a ammonia/methane residue. If everything is cured and cleaned 100% they both are just pure silicone in the end.

The whole "mold free" labeling is just marketing

This is the guy who struggled for years to calibrate pH meters with distilled water then declared that they don't work. He also performed a kH or gH test incorrectly for years. And he believes oxygen is added to bags not for fish to breathe but to stabilize pH.

Apparently, this is 100% silicone...

thanks I was wondering. is this only silicone 2 or for 1 as well I have been reading so many conflicting things it is confusing

So basically everything he is saying there is false about it being just silicone when it is dry?

Well, here are the SDS for an "aquarium-safe" silicone, GE Silicone 1, and what I believe used to be GE Silicone 2.

There doesn't seem to be much difference between Silicone 1 & 2 but I'm not sure I would say neither has mildew inhibitors since it's possible both have them in the form of petroleum distillates (which the aquarium-safe one lacks).

A lot of people say that 100% silicone is safe because they think it's literally 100% silicone and that's the only ingredient. However, it's just a marketing term to distinguish it from allegedly inferior silicone-latex blends of caulk.

That being said, enough people have claimed to have used either Silicone 1 or 2 without issue that it might be that one or both are safe. Personally, I would just pay a little more for the aquarium version as I have enough things to worry about.

So can you elaborate on this a little for us who are not scientists ? The SDS for silicone 1 also states two hazardous ingredients. are these "mold inhibitors" or the chemicals used for the curing process?

Sounds like a BRS study should done on this! I mean I have read SOOOOO may mixed answers I am worried about even using just silicone 1 which I thought was safe. I just got two tubes of it for sump baffle project
