Gem tang going price

My Lfs sometimes gets them in and sells them from 250-500 depending on how many they get and how long they sit

Seems to depend on something I’ve yet to discover. Online I’ve seen them for anything from $399 to $799. My LFS had one for $250 once. Before and after that one occasion they’re pretty consistently around $400

yeah prices have been going down on Gem Tangs from what I have noticed. It’s almost always more affordable at lfs then online for most people.

to an extent at LFSs yeah. I don’t know I’d call $400 affordable just yet, but it is definitely better than online. Especially if your LFS has a pretty solid quarantine procedure.

I am honestly curious about what’s caused a price shift on a “local” level, especially since it doesn’t seem to have affect online sales nearly as much from what I’ve seen.

mind you, I wouldn’t be able to keep one with my 120g dt. But if I had to pick a zebrasoma (sp?), it’d be a gem if I couldn’t get my hands on a scopas

when my lfs gets them in they normally come in around 5-10 at a time. If they get 10 of them they normally won’t have 10 buyers at the higher price of 500 so they will sit on them and end up lowering the prices down to 250ish. Most LFS rather sell at the lower price then sit on exspensive fish like that With limited customers that are interested and risk the potential loss.

I love my Scopas. They seem a bit under rated but they have show some pretty intense color as it shifts from forward tan to brown then black. Then those eyes - black as night.

I've always wanted a Gem but when I was looking the price was too much for me. Even at 400 I probably wouldn't. Not so much as the price, I think it is fair, but more that I don't spend that much on fish or corals.

So I would have to splurge I guess. Just a personal limit thing but it is getting close!!! I to a virtual ownership through the hobbyists here who share pictures :D

Man, I’m glad I’m not the only one. A scopas has such an understated elegance and beauty. If only I had a tank big enough. If I go tang it’s going to be a tomini, which are actually my other favorite so alls well that ends well.

I agree though. I don’t know if I could bring myself to pay that much for a fish if I don’t want to spend more than $150 for a frag lol beautiful fish, and I shall enjoy it vicariously

I had a Cab last night that was more than that....paired nice with a filet :) It is relative...and yet another expensive hobby :(
Yes, sometimes the money we spend on food and entertainment defies all logic, but it's easier as it doesn't require husbandry skills. Although you could argue it requires a different husbandry skill to justify the expense to the wife... :D

I think I would choose the achilles tang over the gem tang.

Like most fish, they shot up in price but falling back to the $500 range

I don’t think there has been any ‘shift’. There will always be the occasional outlier .... perhaps there was a glut of them at wholesale .... As gem supply has broadened prices have come down. A few years ago a gem would go for $2K, now they can be reliably found for $500. Others, like the Achilles have gone the other way.

Also, keep in mind that the addressable market for online is greater than local, thus less reason to lower pricing.
