if treating prophetically, just in case it’s there, for brook and Uronema, is it better to use gc or metro?

Metro I know you can dose every 48 hours, however gc says once every 5-7 days , with the prazi killing the flukes.

Could gc be done every other day for the it’s metro and treating brook/uro?

For those 2 I would go with metro. If you don’t have metro, you can do water changes between dosing GC. If I recall right, prazi stays longer in water thus raising the possibility of an overdose.

Are you planning to use copper or CP prophylactically as well?

I would use general cure, as metro alone does not address flukes. You can treat the tank 5-7 days apart, and also food soak for 10 days which will take care of intestinal parasites.

You can use metro and copper together to address ich, velvet, brook, and uronema...or CP alone if the fish is not sensitive to treat all of the same.

I would use just the metro. If you do want to also treat for flukes just use GC twice on the days the prazi would be needed. It also contains metro, so just use it in place of when metro would have been due anyway. LOL, hope that made sense...

Somewhere in here it also shows how much metro is in GC so you can verify the level would be the same, or higher, than you are trying to maintain for metro. If I recall the level of Metro in it is high though.

Not going to use cp. last time I used it, with a script from a vet, I lost everything.

Will be using copper at same time . I thought using metro, in the gc, 5-7 days apart would be too much time elapsed for the metro part (dose every 48 hours)

Ok so day 1, general cure, day 3 metro, day 5 general cure, then metro day 7,9,11,13,15?

Yep! LOL, now why didn't I think to just show it like that so it made sense? Second round of GC I think could be the day 7, but will let someone else chime in, although 5 would likely be ok too.

General cure has 250mg of metronidazole per packet, while metroplex is approximately 125mg (70% metronidazole 30% excipients) per measure (with instructions to use 1-2 measures per 10g). Just based on labels, I haven’t verified any of these personally... @Humblefish might have more info there.

The only issue you might have, I don’t believe you should actually be doing multiple water changes between the first and last dose of praziquantel. Usually you administer the first dose, wait 5 days, then do a water change before adding dose two. Prazi does most of its work in the first 48 hours so it might be ok... but that’s just something to keep in mind.

I personally do a two-step QT... treat with copper/metro followed by two doses of Prazipro (or vice-versa depending on symptoms) or CP followed by GC (or vice-versa). Just my own process though, there’s lots of good thoughts from various folks here on prophylactic treatments.

If I'm treating for brook or bacteria and flukes, I'll use metro ... but on days when I would add Praziquantel, I'll replace the metro dose with GC.

Could you tell us more about the CP losses? What happened?

GC can be dosed 5-7 days apart because it treats different things. Metroplex for uronema, brook, and some infections should be dosed every 48. Though redundant, GC and metroplex can be used together because fish can typically easily handle a double dose of metro.

I’d definitely use Metroplex for Uronema, but for Brooklynella I’d feel much more comfortable with Formalin, because I’ve beat brook with Formalin several times in the past- combined with tank transfers. That’s just my opinion though as I’ve never tried to eliminate Brooklynella with Metroplex. If it’s working I’m slow to deviate until I see that another method works better or a particular medication is superior to what I’m currently dosing. I’ve honestly not heard of anybody using Metroplex to battle a Brooklynella outbreak.

Can anybody provide a link to a thread where Metroplex successfully treated Brooklynella. I’d like to read up on that. Sounds interesting.
