Ok, So I am wondering how these corals get their names? such as Tyree space monster.. and the cornbred trash mummy eye... and any other LE corals. Just wanted to know since I see alot of them FS on here.

There was a thread here just last week kind of explaining the whole process. In a nutshell, there are a few reputable sellers that have very nice pieces that retain their color (LE), and there are some people who just slap a name on it to claim it as their own. Lots and Lots of names for the same species of coral

Ah, I see. I was just wanting to know as I had no clue. I knew something had special names, but others didnt. So which company does the tyree and cornbred own? do you know? just for my own info///.....

The whole name thing used to be used for linage of a coral which is the history of it you can follow it back to the originator... Like mentioned most le or stuff named in the past meant a few things like it's captive raised and holds color extremely well etc... In today's market it means nothing unless it's a old school piece.... Right now it's pretty much from the ocean to the chop shop tagged with a fancy name and a high price tag then sold for what ever people are willing to pay...:( sad but true!!!!!

Steve Tyree sells only "exotic" pieces after he studies them. It has to be a piece that separates it from the rest. I think cornbred got his name out there from his chalice, and if I recall, he sold the H out of on ebay. LE only stands for Limited Edition, so people will buy anything with LE stamped to it thinking it's "rarer" than anyone else has. As Troylee said, it's not true in today market

The Tyree LE Space Monster was actually named by Josh Gonzalez, the guy who discovered them in a trans shipment. He sent 2 polyps off to Steve Tyree who kept one and auctioned the other off. They were worthy enough for him to put the Tyree name stamp on them.

I'm sorry but that is frickin hilarious. "worthy", give me a freakin break...

As far as I'm concerned NOTHING is "LE". If these corals are truly limited edition why are they being sold all over the place?

Ok. I have gotten my anwser now. So if a coral is LE or Tyree, or whatever its just a expensive label? like IDK for clothing or something? it isnt necessarily better any more? So I can be a cheap a** and buy the cheap crap? LOL!

Well, the TSM is a pretty fast grower. I got mine in Oct, it was 3 heads and I am now at 8. Go back to when the first Tyree LE corals were released. Most of us would not buy them today, as they are not near what is available now. I don't buy based on name but how the coral looks and whether or not I like it.

LOL!! I look at things that way, If I like the way a coral looks I will buy it if not, not going to pay for a name. know what I mean?

There are VERY few named corals I would pay the price tag for since I can go onto divers den and find the same exact coral as a 3-6 inch colony for 1/10th to 1/100th the price. Personally if I ever "discovered" a really new or impressive coral I would name it "can't think of an expensive name acro" or some crap like that and spread the thing around like crazy.

Some of the really expensive corals actually do grow very very very very slow....Which literally makes them limited edition, but not tyree's limited edition...I always tell people that arent in the hobby, but interested,"these named corals are like designer or name brand clothes..."

Lets keep this un heated, its a simple question, and gets a simple answer.

Tyree LE corals are corals that Steve Tyree introduced into the hobby a few years back.Tyree is a big time coral collector who has been collecting corals for many years. He has been importing, collecting, studying, and purchasing corals for YEARS.

The whole theroy of LE corals is to be able to track back your coral to its originator, and know that it is the original, not a knock off. This dosent matter to some, but it matters to me.The corals are not all Tyrees corals.Tyree has his own LEs,but only a few are of his own findings. Most of the corals are found by others,Mike of Sexy Corals,Hugo,Greg Caroll, etc.those people are good friends with Tyree,or Tyree sees their corals, and one of the 2 decides to send or trade Tyree a piece of their coral.

After Tyree keeps this coral,he studies it for growth, color, lighting, flow etc.He will then put coral in grow out phase, and will allow it to grow into a small colony cutting an eye or a fragment of this piece off,and selling it as a new release. This is the time when the coral will recive its final price.

After that, the coral is put back into grow out,and grown out.Tyree will cut a piece, and then sell it on his webpage(I will not list the site).

I could go all day,but I think you get the point.Good luck.

On a side note, let me say, there are some chalices that are absolutly rare,Tiger Lily,Tangeriane Dreams, etc. very rare, and very nice, but it depends on your taste.I like rare exotic cool crazy things...most of those are expensive...so,I dont complane...

We can collect button polyps, but what the fun in having somthing that is ugly, not cool, and you cant sell, and most importantly, isnt rare.Or thats how I look at it.

Lets put it this way-A wedding ring bought at dollar general,or a wedding ring bought a Kay Jewlers?Which would you choose?I think I would go with Kay Jewlers!

I dont think it could be said much better!

In all honest truth names to me don't mean a thing. I like buying the fouch or gocce corals. They look just as nice and are a lot cheaper. Like I bought a chalice that had the same coloration as the superman chalice. It was not being sold as a superman chalice. I paid $30 for a 4 eye frag. Now granted if I where to put it next to an actual superman chalice the real superman will probably be brighter and nicer but I don't have a real superman so the knock off looks just as nice in my tank. You just have to be careful. If you are going to buy a LE coral make sure it is from a reputable seller. I know for a fact people buy knock offs and then sell them as the real deal. I saw a post in a local forum of some bragging about their superman chalice a couple days after I got mine. I know it was not real.
