Hi guys!!! New to both the hobby and threads. I did some searching and can’t seem to find one thread that posts general parameters for a reef tank. Just the basics, what’s optimal and what’s the high and low end of each of them. As a newb, I’m quickly realizing all these numbers are the holy grail for everything.

I know they vary so maybe clarifying
“for a newbie to follow for best case scenario general guidelines”.
Anyone have opinions?

optimal level, min and max for:
PH
Nitrites
Nitrates
Salinity
Alkalinity
Mag
Phos
Calcium

I think this info is pretty easy to find -

PH 8.1-8.4
Nitrites 0
Nitrates 1-10ppm (this one is kind of debatable) you need a little.. corals like little.. fish can handle quite a bit
Salinity 1.024-1.026
Alkalinity 7-11dKh .. mid 8's is safe
Mag 1200-1400 target 1300
Phos 0.1 - 1.0 ppm... target .03
Calcium 350-450.. target 400

most important is to stay conisitent and make any changes slowly (unless its an emergency correction - through a new water change).

it depends really on what you are trying to keep, if you were going for a softy dominated reef, dialing in compounds used in building coral skeletons may not be the top of your list.

But Randy's list above is a good range.
