Im with you If I had one collony of any of those type of corals I would donate it to them or send them frags every month or so.

I would love to be able to say that there is enough hobbyist out there, that we should be able to sustain ourselves for the hobby with just aquacultured frags of all the corals that have already been collected. But that would probably make this hobby even more expensive than it already is, over time.

There are over 700 identified stony coral species and tons more not identified. Well be ok. But if they don't do conservation then obtaining corals will be the last thing we have to worry about. 90-95% of stag and elkhorn corals have gone extinct in the florida area alone.

It's kind of ironic that I've been reading a lot about how oceans are acidifying which is leading to concern of reefs all over the world and their survivability. I think it would be a great idea for the govt to work with established reefers to hold and propagate these endangered corals since most reefers that are truly diligent about their slice of ocean seem to only work to have a place for their reef and maintain it(LOL). But even that idea is quite far fetched since you know there would be crazy bureaucratic red tape involved and let's face it acidity levels in the ocean could take a LOT longer then some reefers may be willing to hold on to the hobby unless its a true passion. However an specimen removed from its habitat and properly propagated could be a great way to reintroduce corals back to oceans en mass instead of hoping that little twig in the ocean survives and flourishes. Just my 2 cents.
