Get rid of cyano, higher nutrients?

That makes sense, right? Just making sure. Had cyano (and hair algae). Did a chemiclean treatment and 20% wc (a week prior to treatment, nitrates were 5 and po4 was .049 - didn’t test after the treatment and wc). One week after treatment, did a 15% wc and after wc, nitrates are 10 and po4 is .086. This is the highest they’ve ever tested. I assume this is because cyano is gone and not using up the nutrients?

should I do another wc in a few days? I still need to get the GHA under control. The only things I’ve added to the tank are turbo snails and a capnella.

IME, higher nutrient levels have contributed to Cyano blooms. You may be thinking of Dinos that often thrive in reef systems with extremely low nutrients (esp. PO4) and somewhat higher nutrient levels are recommended.

Yes, high nutrients do contribute to cyano. My hypothesis is that before. When I had cyano, the nutrients tested lower because the cyano was using it. Now the cyano is gone, my nutrients test higher because the cyano is no longer using it up.

This would be true, unless when people say that algae/etc using up your nutrients essentially hides them from your test kit, isn’t true. If that’s not true then there’s no good explanation for why nutrients were lower when more algae/cyano was present.

Yes, correct. If any type of organism is growing (such as algae, cyanobacteria, etc.), it will need to use nutrients/elements. In your case, the increase in nutrients in the water column need to now be kept in check by your preferred method(s).
