leave it to the gov to dip their hands in where they dont belong. i have a friend thats a commercial diver and he can spear his fish grouper/trigger due to all these "disappearing" Red Snapper in the way. the people who put these rules into effect should have to be able to do the research on their own in order to be on the council... i feel to be on these boards you should have to be a certified diver and make at least 2 dives a year in your designated area. if you cant go and find out for your self you shouldnt be able to judge it since you have no real world perspective on it

I think that you are right that they hawaiian goverment is looking for a better way to make more money! This is somethign that is so true in politice across the nation that the politicians will vote a general ban for something and then turn around and say that there is a premium on the livestock in their area and then sell high dollar licenses for collections! you just never know what is going to be next!

So what I see is it is banned by Hawaii County. I really don't see this as a huge deal. From what I have ascertained by talking to locals (the fish stores actually catch thier own fish, thats kinda cool) is most of the aquarium fish are caught in the northwest of the state, NOT the islands (read as "counties") of Hawaii (Big Island) and Oahu. The state is extremely loose on what individual islands do, they act almost as city-states, so it is very unlikely to be a state-wide ban. Don't get your panties in too much of a wad over this.

I've heard Rumors that some of these Hawaiian fish are being relocated to Indonesia for breeding and trade purposes. Most common is the Yellow and Naso Tangs.

Dang, so the resolution passed. SO now what? Goes up to the state to see if they will pass it into a law? At this point it is not enforceable. Does anybody know what we can do? I know there was that petition that I signed. Is there anything else? Don't want to start b*$#^ing yet, not if there is still action to be taken.

Funny, I know.. well KNOW is a strong word, but I have met Jim Lovell several times. He is one of the collectors talked about in the article at the bottom of the write up and was one of the 16 opponents. His main industry is collecting fish for the aquarium trade but he is also has a timing company for races and was (might still be) closely affiliated with Xterra Triathlons which is based in HI. That is how I met him after some of the races. I might try to contact him to see if there is any insight he can offer about action from non-HI residents.

Are you Snorkel Bob's brother? related? You don't see a complete ban of "Hawaii County" a huge deal? How's about dropping the attitude? According to Rev and crew this is supposed to be a friendly place. Anyways, since you just moved to Oahu, Hawaii...........do you know personally any of the divers collecting fish for more than 1 year and not "ascertained" by "talking" to locals? Do you know that at least 40 percent of "Hawaii" fish collected comes from "Hawaii County". I have a uncle in Hawaii that has been collecting fish for half his life and is still doing it to this day. There is 1 fish store on the island that catches some "edited" of their own fish. Randy's at Coral Fish. The rest of his exotics are shipped in thru wholesalers ( i also know 3 personally) who sell to the stores on Oahu. All the fish stores on Oahu get fish shipped in from "Hawaii County" and Randy, which i might add, has his "Hawaii" fish collected around OAHU. If he needs more he gets it from "Hawaii County". Hi Guys

Some misinformation going about, so i'll do my best to make a few things clearer.

The County of Hawaii (Which in this case is the big island named "Hawaii") has passed the first round at the county level. All this means is that it will be going to the legislation to be voted on again. If the legislation passes the ban then it must go to the next round to officially become a bill. This is for the island of HAWAII ONLY.

What this means - if it passes - Oahu (where 80-90% of the exporting occurs) will inevitably be next. But this also means, that only the Big Island is shut down - so exporting will resume from Oahu.

However, 95% of the yellows in the industry (yes 95%) are coming from the big island. So no more yellows, or atleast none for 15$. They will become a 200$ fish over night, at minimum, since there will not be enough to go around.

Importing of any kind is still allowed. So christmas island (flames, blacks, bartletts etc), Marshalls (mysteries, helfrichi etc) will still be coming in. But what most people dont understand is that without Hawaii fish, CXI and MI fish are pretty much useless. The margin is to low to sustain, so those prices will also increase dramatically until eventually everyone will fizzle out.

Most stores do not catch their own fish. In fact, i dont think any. Coral Fish catches fish mainly for wholesale. Most of the divers are independent divers who sell to wholesalers, who then sell it to wherever its going.

Each island is its own county or entity for the most part. however, they are all watched over by the state, and if this thing gains momentum, the state will have the authority to shut it down as a state wide ban. From my understanding, if it isn't a state law, you can still collect, however being a county law, makes it very difficult to do so. If all the counties say "no fishing", then it WILL become a state law.

But for now, we are all fine. Exporting is as it always was. And we will see what happens
