I had a 55gal. FOWLR tank that I have gotten rid of. it has been about 8 years since I had the tank I just bought a 125gal. and looking to set it up. I have been looking and a lot has changed since I was last in the hobby. i.e. L.E.D. lighting, filtering options and so on. I want to start this to get help discussing do's and don't s. Like the tank I have has not been drilled yet and I would like to start this off with should I drill the top or the bottom. what is the best and worst ideas? I am in no rush I want to get this done right. what are your opinions with lighting? I do want corals and clams and a few fish to compliment the ecosystem.

Welcome to R2R! Lots of good information and experiences here. Most are drilling the back of the tank these days. Big fan of SB Reef Lights new "Ultra" LED light system. You control it with your phone. Plenty of spectrum and power. Infinite adjustments. Built like a tank. No fan to make noise. Consider starting a "Build Thread" to chart your course, post pics, etc. Here's the link: https://www.reef2reef.com/forums/member-tanks.52/

Welcome to Reef2Reef. IMHO you picked the perfect forum for feedback and to learn. As for your tank, depending on the type of tank you may be limited to only drill the side. Since I don't know what type of tank you have, some tanks have tempered galls on the bottom, which you won't be able to drill. If you could drill the bottom it would allow you to put the tank closer to the wall and the plumbing is more accessible from under the stand. I think it's matter of personal preference and the type of tank.

Welcome! I have been gone for a 11 years and started back up a few weeks ago! Get ready for a download! Big G has been a big help and go dry rock with Natures Ocean from amazon :)

Welcome to R2R and back to the hobby!!:)

This is the tank I have it's a shallow 125gal. My plan is to raise it up about a foot and run the plumbing threw the wall into the laundry room to a refugium/sump tank ... looking at a 90gal. Tank for that. Thals a 4 foot level next to tank.

Great for coral! It's basically a frag tank - for small kids at that height! The plants will have to go. The canopy will be off often as you work on things inside the tank.

Yes the plants will be going and the top too. I will be building a base to raise it up 1 foot. then after tank is established then will build a bar around it.
