Hey guys,

I'm getting some film on the water surface at the end of my 180 peninsula. I DO NOT want a powerhead on the open end of the tank.

Right now I have two aquatop powerheads, both rated for 2600gph at the other end. I get great surface movement, except in the last 1ft of the tank.

Are there any reasonable powerheads or there that can push 6ft across the tank?

Some sort of gyre configuration would probably be best for a peninsula but I do not have that type of tank. I have 2 in my 180 on opposing sides so maybe someone can chime in on a good setup for a peninsula.

I looked at a gyre, but they won't fit on either side of the overflow ☹️

+1 on this. Photos might help, but it sounds like your powerheads are pushing everything down to the end and it can’t get back to the overflow side to get skimmed off. You may want to move one powerhead lower so that there is some flow on top back to the overflow.

Wait for the new Octo Blade that is going to be release at the first of the year, I think this will solve you problem with flow and the overflow ;)

You can see the one powerhead on the right. The heater has since been moved. But there is another powerhead on the other side of the overflow.

Yeah, I’d try moving one powerhead much closer to the surface and the other one lower in the tank. This should allow the one up high to push the film back to the overflow.

Looks like you could install gyres, they’d just have to mounted vertically.

Also, you can float paper towels on the surface (just long enough for them to get wet) to remove some of the film temporarily.

I am in the same boat as you. I have a 5' long peninsula and I have been researching how best to approach flow at the far end.

Have you considers moving your return line to the far end? This might be less obtrusive than a powerhead.

Also what if you put coral at the far end that dont require a lot of flow. These are just some ideas I am considering myself. I have zero experience on the matter just offering some ideas. I have only started reefing quite recently.

Hope you find a good solution brother!

While they may not be great at dispersing flow short distances like MP40s and Gyres , tunze stream pumps do an excellent job at pushing broad flow long distances in tanks and pack alot of gph for their size.
Also they make rocks to hide the pumps in too, not to mention they last decades!

How long are the power cords on gyres? I'm thinking about getting one for the end of the peninsula, but need about 10ft of cord to run the wire down the opposite side to the power bar

Running the returns to the far end!! There's an idea! And it will only cost a few dollars in PVC pipe.

I think I'll try this first, maybe tonight when the kids go to bed.

I am looking for information as well. My overflow limits space on the plumbing side, so right now I can fit a single MP40 on one side. On the other, I have a gyre xf350 lined vertically on the far side of the overflow. Not happy with the gyre. But the overflow is slightly off center, so on the far side of the overflow, I do not have enough room for another MP40.

My single MP40 moves A LOT of water. But I still am not getting the flow I imagine people talk about when they have high flow. Are there any powerheads made for moving lots of water long distances? Seems like the Tunze Turbelle Stream3 might be an option?
