I am having some green hair algae issues in my display on rocks. I run a fuge with chaeto and light on reverse fromdisplay tank for 8hrs a night. Nitrate are 5ppm and phosphates 0.05. If I shut my display lights off, scrub and remove all hair algae in display and then run my fuge 24 hrs will that help grow the algae in the sump rather than display? Any input?

Try running your fuge light for 12 to 16 hours a day. Unless it is a very high powered light I would also mount it as close to the water as possible. That should help the fuge grow algae.

Sounds good. Im running just the kessil H/80 on the gooseneck but i think its too high because light spill is causing more hair algae in other places in the sump as well but cannot figure out a way to lower it. im trying to get more growth below rather than display. lol

I run chaeto in my sump and the grow light is where all my algae grows. it is an older pic, but it is fill of algae now and my DT is free of it. i have to get down there every week or 2 to clean it up.

I run my light from 12:00 am to 8:00 am and that seems to be enough to out compete my DT, its a cheap not all that powerful amazon light, but it works.

Ideally, you want more PUR for algae in the sump than the DT. So this means you want your fuge lit longer than your DT with higher PAR levels. Odds are your fuge light cannot output higher PAR than your DT lights but you can make up the difference by mounting it lower.

You may also just want to beef up your CuC. Not sure what you have going, but it normally isn't hard to find stuff to eat hair algae and keep the display looking clean.

I don’t belive it will pull enough nutrints to out compete. Esp depending on how many fish you have.

I have horribly high nutrients right now but have zero gha in one display. The smaller display is similar and I’m getting some gha, but I also lost a bunch of snails recently.

I ordered a big clean up crew to hopefully help. But the spill from the light, I am growing algae even inside my dang skimmer. I do not get it and have never had issues like this and I only have 5 fish?
