I have been watching this wonderful site from afar for quite some time. I maintained a 185 gallon glass reef tank for over 20 years up until the last few years. Getting old, health issues and the high probability of having to downsize has led me to the realization I will not be setting it up again... or at least that is what my wife says! So... I have a bunch of equipment available that I would like to see go to someone who would or does enjoy the pleasure of reef keeping as I was. My equipment sustained the 185 gal scratch free glass oblong tank with two internal corner sumps and tank stand. hard and soft corals. My tank was located in my den and the wet/dry, protein skimmer and pumps were located in the basement. All my pumps are magnetic driven. The ETS protein skimmer stands about 3 feet tall requires no compressed air source... and a 4' wooden box lighting with 2 175w metal halides and 4 dawn/dusk florescents.

Any suggestions on how best to find folks that might be interested possibly purchasing my stuff? I live in the northeast corner of Maryland.... and my nickname for my rig was Tiny Bubbles...

Thanks in advance! Butch

Hello Butch! Welcome to R2R! Craigslist is usually very fast, at least in my experience for selling items. Best of luck. Have you considered doing a nano? Maybe you can trade with some one going in the opposite direction?

Hey Butch,

That sounds really tough. Any chance you might set up a smaller tank like a 30, 50 or 75? Bet you could reuse a lot of your equipment.

I don't know what's available in your neck of the woods, but I buy a lot of used equipment through my local aquarium society and craigslist. Also you could sell through the R2R sales forums.

Good luck, and hope you don't have to quit reefs entirely!

PS: Tiny Bubbles - I remember my mom would sing that song to herself sometimes when she was doing stuff around the house... :)

First that's disappointing! Fingers crossed that you can keep tiny bubbles!

Wish I lived nearby. You'd have a customer right here!

Butch, you can't walk away from this. Perhaps you can move to a smaller tank? I'm sure you could save some of your old equipment. Perhaps there is an aquarium service in your area? But no matter what, we need to keep you in the hobby because you just joined our fantastic forum. We could really use more people with your years of experience on here sharing information. I'm glad you joined R2R! Welcome home.

Welcome to R2R Butch! I totally understand your situation. I’ve been where you are and it’s no fun. I got sick about 13 years ago. It started with Rheumatoid Arthritis and progressed to osteoporosis then a couple of spine surgeries along with the pain of these diseases and several broken bones we downsized to a Ranch with basement. I don’t sleep a normal schedule so we built a sitting room off of the Master BR. Once we settled in I found myself sitting around slowly loosing my mind. I had had aquariums when I was younger and even tried saltwater back in the mid 80’s but gave them up when we had kids and work was crazy busy so I decided it was time again to try saltwater. Since setting up my 180 in my sitting room about a year ago, I’ve found that it has given me something to do and learning to keep a reef tank has helped my mind to stay busy and sharp. I know this hobby can be demanding physically and I still struggle with some of the things most people don’t think twice about but with the automation available, and a very supportive wife, I’ve been able to start and maintain my reef tank and develope a much better frame of mind. It sounds like you have made the decision to sell the tank but if you can work it out, these boxes of saltwater really do have a therapeutic value. I wish you the best of luck!

Welcome to R2R! I have a 25g all in one nano and it does not take much work at all. But since you have as much experience as you do, Go ahead and get a Pico Jar going! They still give you the happiness of a reef without all the long up keeping. Still have to upkeep the jar but it does not take up much space at all and takes less time for maintenance.
