I am getting ready to upgrade from a 27 gallon cube to a 40 breeder and I’m not only super excited but super nervous. I only have two clowns and various snails, hermits, a brittle star, a coral banded shrimp, and a pistol shrimp. I also ordered a rodi filter system and a glass top. My precious tank jas no top and evaporation was bad. I’m getting ready to start cultivating copepods as well as get a set up done to hatch brine shrimp because I really want a blue mandarin. I also want to try a couple of corals. Some green star polyps and maybe a couple of torches. This will be an simplest tank. I have a 70 gallon hob filter as well as a small hob refugium. I will start posting pictures as soon as I get the tank up to my third floor apartment And get started

Sounds like a nice upgrade! Be sure to post pictures :)

What is your plan for lighting?

In regards to the glass top, consider only cover half of the tank if possible. Most saltwater tanks utilize a screen top to prevent jump, allow gas exchange, and allow light penetration.

An ATO pump and reservoir are definitely your friend ;)

I have a Current Orbit Marine LED light.

I will try that.

I will probably invest in one at the beginning of the year. Have to do more research.

Sumps and overflows are more simple than they seem!

With this upgrade, adding a sump is the prime time to do so. You can use a 20 or 29g tank as a sump. Or buy a premade one.

I’m really scared to drill my tank and I know there are other options to add an overflow. I just don’t know a lot about them. I’m afraisd of a flood.

floods don't happen much at all. the main thing is to make sure your sump is large enough to let the water above the overflow drain into the tank. Which is very easy to do.

I used a HOB overflow when i was in 8th grade to get my first sump going. a drilled one (like the synergy shadow) is much better. both are easy to install. drilling holes is much easier than it sounds.

I had a 55g with a drilled overflow, i have never come close to a flood. When most people "flood" something, it tends to be their ATO
