I have a 55 gallon-
no anemones, nothing reef related right now. I had a BTA that did good for a month, i traded that in for 2 reasons.
1.my tap water contained HIGH nitrates that i didn't know about (around 40)
& 2.my clowns didn't like it too much anyway.

So, im going to get them down to 0 before i try a different anemone. Today, I got my RO/DI system by spectrapure in. I did a 10 gallon change with the new saltmix of ro di water today, and i did a two 10 gallon changes a few days before then with Culligans water at walmart that had no nitrates.

Am i doing right by doing 10 gallon water changes every couple of days to get rid of nitrates? Or is there a better way.

Yes going slowly with small water changes is a great idea. Make sure the water you are using has zero or very low TDS and zero nitrates.

Ok cool thanks, i have dark maroon string algae spreading and it's making my tank look a mess fast.

reducing the nitrates should help with the algae to. but sometimes can promote algae growth. its goin gto be hard to get your nitrates to complete zero without adding some extra equipment and nitrate/phosphate removers. i would shoot for around 10 if your planning on keeping zoas palis ,rics/yumas, lps, and sps but may want a little lower for it.

another thing do you have a skimmer or anythign to help with the nitrates?

Bulk Reef Supply carbon and GFO reactor. Got rid of all nitrates and phosphates and stay at 0 everytime I check. I struggled with nitrates for a long time but with the reactor and Bubble magus skimmer its doing fine now. 75 gallon
