Greetings! I'll try to keep this short, and also do my best to explain where I'm at.

My wife decided she wanted a saltwater aquarium. I told her there was quite a bit associated those, to which she replied "I'm sure you can figure it out" thanks for the vote of confidence...

I have been doing quite a bit of reading and there is so much information with varying opinions, I'm asking you - someone who has (hopefully) successfully gotten one of these set up.

We are looking in the 45-60 gallon tank range, and have found some decent aquariums with a stand. I think we are set there, unless someone has a specific opinion on a great tank. I would like to go the live rock w/ fish route. I like the idea of some natural filtration.

I have read 1 lb rock per gallon, though some say you can go less. Yea or nay?

I think I understand the curing process of the rock. At least the "why", however there are detailed enough instructions to be found.

My bigger questions come in the form of equipment.

I have read about using reverse osmosis systems for water, various salt products (instant ocean?), blowers, lighting, heaters, protein skimmers, etc.

I'm really hoping for some good recommendations on what is a good product and what do I actually need. If I successfully set up the live rock, how much of a filtration system do I need? Are the blowers necessary? If so, is one adequate, or should I get 2 to create a loop of sorts. Heater is required of course.. 1 or 2?

I may think of some more, but this should be a good start. Thank you so much for replies in advance!!

First of all, welcome to R2R. You're off to a good start by doing your research. The most important thing to do is go slow, take your time, and not rush to get things going.

If you haven't found the thread below, I would start there. A lot of great, basic information and answers can be found there.

Once you determine what your plans and goals are for the tank, it will be easier to make specific recommendations as to equipment.

Can you clarify on type of tank you want? You mentioned live rock with fish. Do you plan on putting any corals in there or are you just going to do fish?
