Getting started pretty soon

Have you decided on a tank yet?
I have a 55 gal tank, but that's it so far. I was considering a biocube, but wanted something that would have more presence in the room, and I can play with the sump. When I purchased it, I figured it was huge! There's no fish I could possibly want that wouldn't be happy in a 4' long tank right? I didn't realize that it was possible for 200 gal to be a recommended tank size for a reef fish.

Now that the greetings seemed to have stopped, I'd like to point out that this has been the most entertaining greeting thread of any forum I've ever been on. is it a policy here for everyone to swarm new member posts, comment, and like every previous post? I count 276 likes in only 2 pages.

Greetings! I'm starting my first salt aquarium. I've done many years of reading and am finally getting it going. Once I finish building the stand and get plumbing finished, I can start the fun part.

Welcome to the forum and a fulfilling hobby.

I would suggest deciding which fish you want to keep. THEN build you system around those fish.

It's can't say exactly what I want, but I definitely want some kind of tang eventually. I think the Sohal is a pretty fish, but I really don't want to start with a tank big enough for him. I figure 55gal (4' x 1.5' footprint) is big enough to have some good fun and small enough to learn on. I've seen some big fish at the store in a 250+ gal square-ish tank and they still looked cramped... it took a Hippo like 3 swooshes to get from one side to the other. I think I'd feel bad looking at a good sized fish in anything smaller than a 180 (6' x 2' footprint). If all goes well over the next few years (and I find a bag of cash lying around), I want to rip out my defunct fireplace, commandeer a linnen closet and bedroom closet, and mount a massive tank inside the living room wall :D

Torps, not a policy but it is encouraged. Many of us appreciate how much more comfortable we felt posting to the forum after all of the warm greetings and like to reciprocate. The likes are a way to thank or agree with the other posters.

The welcome threads are always entertaining. There are some users that have a real talent for making or finding memes.

Here's a fun fact:

New, inexperienced reef keepers generally do better with bigger tanks as fluctuation in chemistry is less dramatic in bigger tanks.

That's why I went 55 gal. On the larger side to keep equilibrium. Samll enough to be cheaper and no massive water changes. My buddy did say his 30 gal cube is easier to maintain cause it's smaller, but keeping perameters is hard. He had some hitchhiker anemone (or something) that died and killed the entire tank. He likes it over his larger tank tho.
