I had a gc change the outlet my tank runs on to a gfci outlet. Twice now it has tripped (both times I was right there, luckily) and shut off everything. Has anyone else had this problem??
Any suggestions?
There's no way for anyone to get behind the tank (Red Sea reefer 525) without draining it completely. I did leave about 10 inches or so behind the tank so I can push the reset and get to the outlet.

It sounds like you have a failing piece of equipment and that the GFCI is working as intended. I would recommend trying to figure out which piece is failing and replace it.

Do you have a ground plug in your system?

I don't think so. Unless there's one in the Apex. Everything is hooked up to that except the lights.
I just checked. Yes, both plugs in the outlet are ground plugs.

You said you were "right there" when the gfci tripped. Were you touching the tank when it tripped?

No, across the room. Just heard the gurgling when the return pump shuts off.

Do you have a heater plugged in?
I have seen CFCI trip on a sudden load on a few occasions.. Also, if you have a big system load, make sure your circuit is wired properly to handle the current..

If you had a ground plug installed you should get a trip any time the failing component turns on. Personally, I would get a ground plug and install it. Then I would plug pieces of equipment into an extension cord with a GFCI built in, one at a time, to see which one trips the gfci on the extension cord. Then you will have found your problem.

Thank you. I do have a heater in the sump. I'll check everything.

Just remember, unless you have a ground probe in your tank your testing may be inconclusive. Glass is an excellent insulator so you would need some other path to ground to get the gfci to trip. Salt creep or dripping water can do it but it may be more intermittent.

IF YOU HAD TO TAKE A REEFING EXAM, WOULD YOU PASS?
