I think I should be plugging my equipment into a GFCI for obvious reasons. My question is, should I replace an existing standard electrical outlet with a GFCI outlet of use a GFCI extension cord ? Do the both offer the same protection ?

I'm no electrician so hopefully somebody with more electrical experience will chime in here but from what I understand, it's recommended that the first outlet in your series be controlled under GFCI, not necessarily the outlet your equipment plugs into. If any problem should occur with your equipment, it will activate the first gfci and power all outlets off instead of only half which could cause potential dangers. Again, I'm no electrician so hopefully somebody else will throw an answer in here. Following

Where I see this..
option 1 replacing the receptacle in the wall does expose a person to a potential shock hazard during replacement.
option 2 is the safe route if there is no electrical knowledge

( I am a medically retired 23 years as an electrician so safety first! )

Should be on a gfci outlet separate line going to the panel box atleast that what I did

I have some electrical experience. I'll probably replace the outlet. I need to figure out what else is plugged into the circuit first. Don't want to have something like the fridge loose power.

Get a lamp and plug it into the same outlet as your equipment. Turn it on then find out which breaker controls that outlet by switching them off until lamp goes off. Then use the lamp to test other outlets when that breaker is on/off. Unless you have a tester

I have a tester and a multi meter. Should be simple. Just want to use the best protection method possible.
