Hey all. My outlets for my tank will be on the same circuit as my outside patio which has a gfi outlet but not sure if downstream or up.

My understanding is this little tool or one like it at the link below will tell me if a particular outlet is protected within the circuit

Am I wrong?

If you push the button on that tool it should pop the GFCI assuming you’re on that circuit and it is wired properly.

Just hit the test button on the gfci. The entire circuit should go out

Always better to be sure when electricity is involved lol

Regardless of how many you already have i believe code is to have any outlet 4' from a water source must be a gfci

Thanks again. Everyone On this forum has been so helpful and so quick to respond. Definitely great for a new beginner

GFCI doesnt have to be there physically, the outlet next to the water source has to be protected by it; could be another GFCI down the line, remote GFCI (blank face) or inside the panel.

That will work, yes. pretty sure building code requires them within 4 or 5 feet though. Just thinking worst case scenario and you're getting inspected from a fire. Rather not have insurance claim turned down from electrical not up to code

Good idea to have tank on gfci, paired with a ground probe, but better to have it on it’s own separate gfci.
