So i installed a gfci outlet behind my fishtank. As far as i know there is one other plug after the gfci.

So everything was running great until the other day during a thunderstorm here all the sudden i noticed my tank was off. I was like what the heck then look and my gfci had tripped.... hmmm

Well i unplugged everything from the gfci reset it and it still tripped with nothing plugged into it. About an hour later everything was fine and hasnt tripped again.

It was raining outside when this happened and wasnt about an hour later. Thoughts?

Whenever I hook up a fishtank I have it on a dedicated line. Is this line shared with any other outlets in an other rooms? Was it only the GFIC that tripped or the whole breaker?

This was my goal. The one outlet that comes off the gfci is behind my couch and not used and i didnt think anything else was on that breaker. So essentially it should of been the only thing on that breaker. But now its got me wondering if maybe something outside my home is also on that line. I will have to check outside.

And it was only the gfci that tripped so that is why it makes me think maybe there is a plug outside i do not know about.

This is exactly why I wouldn’t use gfci on my tank and I’m a licensed electrician. They trip
Way too easily.

I had originally run GFCI for my tank on a dedicated circuit. The GFCI would occasionally trip for no reason (that I could identify). I couldn't find any meaningful stray voltage and I didn't have a grounding probe. After running the tank on a bunch of extension cords, I ended up ripping them all out and replacing them with standard outlets.
