Could someone explain to me how a Gfo and carbon reactor works. I want to get a brs one. I'm just confused on how they work.

Instead of using a mesh bag to place the carbon and gfo in ur sump, your using a pump to push water into the reactor threw the media and back into ur sump

With the BRS dual reactor, the GFO goes into the first canister...about 2/3's full. The second canister holds the carbon....filled to the top. You adjust the valve to just get the GFO to tumble. And that's it. Not sure if it comes with a pump or not, but if you need to purchase, don't get a Maxijet...the new ones are a piece of you-know-what now made in China. Instead, get a Cobalt MJ1200....it's the original maxijet made by the original Italian company.

Im pretty sure filling the canisters depends on total water volume.

I certainly could see you cutting down on GFO, but with carbon, you want it totally filled so that it doesn't tumble.

GFO should be used in low dosages or it can lead to bleaching of stony corals. Two Little Fishies, the makers of Phosban, have the most accurate recommendations at 10 grams per 10 gallons maximum dosage and start with half that amount or less and work up over time. Never use the BRS recommended dosage as it is at least twice what any other vendor recommends. Love their GFO and chemicals but their dosages are suspect.

I have the same reactor. With BRS rox carbon directions say 1 tbsp per 10 gallons. It goes in the second canister so it wont tumble. And that amount is supposed to last a few months per BRS.

I hated the dual reactor, too hard to get the right flow for the GFO without it being too much for the Carbon. I much prefer two separate reactors and pack the Carbon between two sponges so you can use any amount you want without worrying about it tumbling and grinding itself up. If your return pump is adequate you can plumb a manifold off of it to run your reactors. That's what I did and like it a lot. Just put a valve on the manifold so you can shut flow off to the reactors for maintanence/refilling without having to shut down the return.
