In an attempt to save space I'm wondering if I can run GFO in my mesh sock. Same socks as what BRS sells. I'd like to throw some GFO in the bottom of it and simply let my tank flow down over it.

Ultimately I'm going to build a custom super nice stand but rather than clogging up space with reactors I would rather utilize my giant return pump, add some 4 in Mesh socks and split my tank to sump plumbing to spread out over a few different socks.

Not sure how GFO does in a filter sock but I know you can’t do the same with GAC. The carbon gets pounded and sends dust into the aquarium. GFO May turn into a brick if not allowed to tumble though.

Yeah I know carbon is more delicate for sure. GFO needs to tumble so it doesn't become a solid brick so I was thinking in the bottom of the sock may work (keeping in mind it's the same material basically as the media bags) due to the high flow. I've read mixed opinions on gfo in a bag buy mostly due to flow and contact time. Seems to make sense to me but that doesn't always mean it's right. Lol.

Some run GFO passively in mesh bags so I’m sure it will work to a degree. Probably not near as efficient as with a reactor but still work.

Something else to consider is the wear and tear that the GFO will cause on the socks.

Have you thought of using something else for Phosphate removal? I use Phosguard which doesn't need to tumble. I usually run it in a reactor but I have used it in a media bag placed in the mesh sock if the reactor is being used. I think if you put the GFO loose in the mesh sock that it would probably tumble towards the top of the sock and become more solid towards the bottom but you can give it a try.

I'll definitely look into that. Thank you. Trying to save space is tough these days. [emoji3]
