Was switching out my GFO the other day in my vertex reactor. Got a decent amount of GFO through the reactor that's now in my sand bed. Only real sand sifter/dweller is a conch. Is having the GFO in my display hazardous? It actually looks halfway decent.

Another question. After I noticed this, after a few hours, I took the reactor offline and drained the water planning on reassembling the mesh pads and adjusting the sliding stopper thingy. Very technical, I know. I've let the GFO sit without any water for a few days now. Can I still use it or should I dump it and start with a fresh batch?

You should be fine

I would toss the GFO and start fresh. What ever Bactria and matter that was trapped in the GFO has died off and would be released into the system.

Appreciate the reply.

Good point. Although it was only in for a couple of hours, no need to introduce any amonina. Also, it's only a cup so.....

+1 throw away the used GFO

You can also syphon your sand to a fine filter sock in the sump to pull out all the fine GFO is needed, but it won't hurt the Conch if you leave it, but over time it may release the PO4 back into the tank.
