So I just recently added a Blue fin reactor to my system and bought a hanna checker to test my phosphates. This is the first time I have ever checked them as I always have some algae and didn't see the point.

The hanna tested at .05

So I am interested in where you would go from here? Everything in my tank looks great I have a few acros that I feel could have some better color but nothing is brown.

I have currently been running half the amount of gfo BRS suggests for about a month. Should I bump up the amount I run to three quarters the suggested for a few weeks and see if it drops?

I do have about ten random spots like this where big tufts of algae have popped up and they are getting bigger every week. Never had them before?

.05 is actually a good level. I use half the amount of GFO BRS recommends, but I change out every two weeks.

Your level is not .05. Because you have those algae patches, they are sucking up phosphate that is not detectable because they are using it to grow. Add more gfo

Its not too bad. But, probably a lot of the phosphate is being sucked up by the algae. If they are getting worse, then you will need to reduce the phosphate level a bit more. I would also boost up the CUC and attempt some manual removal. Be careful with manual removal though...if you can have someone siphone out the floating bits whilst you are plucking the algae out that would be fine. Filter the water through filter wool and return water to tank.

Dont go too aggressive on the GFO though, you risk STN/RTN and pale colours if you remove too much too quickly.

I hate this part of a new tank...

Thanks guys I am going to bump up the gfo a tad and keep taking it slow.
