I’ve been thinking about building a diy gfo reactor I was wondering if it would help get rid of the red/brown algae that covers my sandbed that’s like a sheet
Sounds like cyanobacteria.
Phosphate(gfo) and nitrate reduction can help,
But the first step is going to be increasing flow. Sheets of cyano on the sand bed are often accompanied by areas of very little flow. These ares after the cyano builds up can become hypoxic further limiting beneficial organisms from eating or outcompeting, add to this cyano produces toxins that stop the encroachment of other organisms.
1). Up the flow
2). Vacuum or remove through other means(sometimes these sheets can just be picked up) out what sheets you can.
3). Test your water(this really can be any step 1-3 lol no and po4
4). Set a goal for both macro nutrients, 5-10 no3, .01-.1 po4 use media, pwc, fuge to achieve this goal slowly.
5). While doing this clean your sand bed in a grid. 1 day this square, few days another square be sure to get any areas trapped by rock. Dont do the entire tank at once unless removing and cleaning the sand else where. High po4 can take a awhile to drop with, argonite binding. But extra gfo so can change often, as high po4 with quickly make gfo reach capacity, compared to low levels.
