The nano only has flow control on the top the larger units also have flow control at the pump.

That's what I thought... I'm afraid that if I install a gate valve on the discharge, I'll have pretty much no flow, once I've eliminated the excessive tumbling of the gfo. Also, the more I think about it, if I put the gfo in a filter bag, it will allow no tumbling at all. I'm left with no options but to let it tumble excessively.

Can the valve control from zero flow to max or only from certain flow to max?

Only from certain flow to max, it will not shut down completely, I have it on lowest setting.

Got it, then look like of media is too light that the min flow is still too much, I do not see an option other than bag or change media...

Considering cutting round pieces of filter floss to sandwich from the top diffuser to the top of the gfo... That may restrict flow a bit to where I can turn up the flow on the discharge to compensate for the loss of flow and get the right balance.
