GHA Problems

I found pockets of GHA growing out of my rockwork in a couple of places and thought nothing of it. After a while it began to grow in other spots and is being an eyesore. I decided to start removing it by hand, the tank would look decent for a week or so, but the GHA would come back out of the holes in the rock. I bought an algae blenny which wont touch any of it. Bought 2 more tangs, stopped feeding everyday ( now every other day) Tangs wont touch it, they eat around it. I'm now getting extremely frustrated that manual removal and tangs arent riding of this stuff. What do I do?

***Something I discovered this weekend while looking top down on a step stool. I found a huge mat of GHA growing behind one of the rockwork which leads me to believe alot of phos is locked up and my readings are totally false.***



Tank info:
1 year old
100 gallon system

Lighting:
-T5/LED on for 8 hours T5 , 10 hours LED. Blue plus bulbs and kessil on blue spectrum
-Flood lamp on reverse cycle for macroalgae

Filtration :
-Filter cups with floss and reefspec carbon
-Protien skimmer
-Chaeto on reverse cycle
-15watt UV sterilizer

Flow:
2x MP40s

Fish-Blue hippo, foxface, combtooth blenny, algae blenny, tomini tang, kole tang

CUC: ( wont touch it either)
5 hermits
Dozen turbo snails

Parameters: ( Hanna and red sea)
Alk 8
Calc 480
Mag 1350 to 1380
Nitrates 0
Phos .06ppm

I’m with you. Pain for sure. I actually let mine grow in some spots. I like to watch it wave in the current. Tangs usually won’t keep it in check.

For your hundred gallon I would definitely beef up the CuC. I like reefcleaner.com if you haven’t checked them out. I just ordered 200 little guys for my 180. It was time for me to restock. They have good selection and descriptions and recommendations for tanks.

I am trying to back down my lighting some. Try cutting back a little at a time but keep eye out, if coral doesn’t like it they will tell you. Maybe also run Gfo in a reactor or bag. I am trying out Vibrant and MicrōBacter as well.

The best method is also just grab and clean.

I just installed and started running rowaphos in a reactor tonight. Rechecked my phos, it's at .06. Will check again in a few days and see if it actually goes down. I'm gonna ain't for .02 and hope it weakens the gha.

Ramp your Mag up to about 1500 for a week or two. I had similar and fellow reefer recommended Kent Tech M (Magnesium) and to keep mag at about 1500. Within 2 weeks GHA was gone.

Honestly there’s more to just p04 or n03 if you have hair algae problems. Usually it comes down to a bacteria issue not being able to break down all the doc’s and ammonia and leads to algae being able to feed off the ammonia directly before denitrification. Get your nutrients in check and I might suggest dosing some dr. Tims eco balance. Cheers
