Hello! I have a question about what I believe is GHA.. I had a problematic infestation of it in my old tank, and, since we were moving and I wanted to downsize, I chose to do a semi-fresh start- I put all my live rock and sand in an opaque tote (with a bubbler and heater but no feeding) and left it, sealed up for 4 months. I recently set up my new tank and started to cycle it... the algae is BACK (see attached photos). I do not understand! I’m not thrilled about starting the battle once again, so thinking about tearing down and bleaching everything starting from scratch... Any recommendations?

Hey there,

Welcome to R2R!!! GHA is certainly not the most fun to deal with but of all the nuisance algae there is, it is probably the easiest to work with. Once your tank is cycled I would do as much manual removal as you can and start with a decent clean up crew to get yourself rolling.

GHA is a really common algae, even the most mature setups will deal with it from time to time. The key is to get your nutrients under control and have enough of a clean up crew to keep things in check. For GHA I've found turbo snails to be the best IME.
