In the ten gallon I used it in last I added drops. 8 drops raised the ammonia to 4.0 mg/l. Let the ammonia level drop back down toward zero and do it again. When you can read zero ammonia within a certain time period (I think 8 hours), you check nitrite. If nitrite is also zero, your tank is ready for livestock. You will have a lot of nitrate though, so do a water change. Just don't stop dosing ammonia once it's cycled until you add livestock or the bio filter you've been building will starve.
